Indie Law provides services in the areas of intellectual property, of which copyright and trademark law are an important part, digital rights and information and communication technology (“ICT”), media & entertainment and specific domains with which creators and entrepreneurs are confronted, such as commercial law and contracts, privacy and data protection, obtaining clearance, tax law for authors and computer programmers, and artists’ statute.
From the beginning of your career or the start-up of your company, a long-term vision conditions its sustainability and growth. This translates into the setting up of an appropriate structure and the protection of your creations and brands. Throughout your journey, many legal aspects, such as contracts and litigation, will cross your path. As these will have an impact on your future, sound advice is essential.
How do we handle your case?
Because a lawyer-client relationship is built on understanding and trust, an orientation meeting at the start of the collaboration is useful. This makes it possible to map out the needs, working methods and conditions of cooperation. The law also imposes certain formalities on lawyers, such as taking a copy of your identity card. After mapping out the case and its merits, we draw up an action plan and timeline and make an estimate of the budget.
Unambiguous communication and “management of expectations” only benefit the cooperation. Once the action plan has been put into effect, we keep you informed of every evolution and next step.
Because the outcome of a case in which another party is involved does not allow to forecast the exact outcome, continuous consultation is a must.

Although, as a creator, you have a copyright on your work without any formalities being required, it can be useful to perform certain actions that provide certainty about the date of creation. Should a discussion arise in the future, it may be crucial to be able to prove the earlier existence of your work. Other rights, such as trademarks (and, with one exception, also design rights), do require registration. Each intellectual property right has specific requirements and its own protection regime. We help you to identify the right protection for your creations and with the appropriate procedures to obtain or increase protection. We also work out the right strategy and actions in case someone infringes your rights.
