“MY PASSION FOR MUSIC DROVE MY CAREER CHOICES”

“Music school was nothing for me, but Nirvana and motivation more than compensated for that when I bought my first guitar. Even today, making music is the hobby that gives me the most satisfaction. I did not become a professional rock artist, but my passion for creativity has determined all further choices. After my law studies (KU Leuven) I obtained an additional master’s degree in Intellectual Property Law (LLM Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary University of London) in the UK.”

From an early age I was inspired by music. Music school was nothing for me, but Nirvana and motivation more than compensated for that when I bought my first guitar. Even today, making music is the hobby that gives me the most satisfaction. I did not become a professional rock artist, but my passion for creativity has determined all further choices. After my law studies (KU Leuven) I obtained an additional master’s degree in Intellectual Property law (LLM Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary University of London) in the UK. After working as a lawyer, I was head of Legal & Business Affairs at EMI Music Belgium for many years and then for some time at The Entertainment Group. I have now been active as an independent legal advisor for more than 10 years. I’m a lawyer at the Brussels Bar, where I’m also chairman of the Intellectual Rights Committee, and a registered legal consultant at the Bar of the State of New York. Furthermore, my involvement in the creative sector is expressed through my membership and board mandates at various sector associations. In addition, I frequently give lectures on legal and business aspects of intellectual property and/or the creative and entertainment industry.

Music is the driving force that guides my dedication as a lawyer.”

“Art is the central and decisive element that has guided me throughout my life. It is more specifically my passion for music that led me to study intellectual property law. At the heart of my commitment lies a lifelong battle: protecting artists to enable them to contribute fully to the cultural enrichment of our society. I believe that my calling is to assist, protect, and advocate for artists with dedication and passion. I place immeasurable value on integrity.”

My academic journey began with the completion of a bilingual Bachelor’s degree in law (Dutch/French) at KU Leuven and Saint-Louis University (UCL). Subsequently, I chose to specialize in art law, international law, and European law by pursuing a Master’s degree in law. In my quest to deepen my expertise, I later completed an additional Master’s program in intellectual property law (LL.M Intellectual Property and ICT Law, KULeuven). After completing my studies in law, I expanded my academic horizons by pursuing studies in musicology. This allowed me to combine my legal expertise with a deep understanding and appreciation of music, thus providing me with a unique perspective that enriches my overall comprehension of art and culture.
