“MY PASSION FOR MUSIC DROVE MY CAREER CHOICES”

“Music school was nothing for me, but Nirvana and motivation more than compensated for that when I bought my first guitar. Even today, making music is the hobby that gives me the most satisfaction. I did not become a professional rock artist, but my passion for creativity has determined all further choices. After my law studies (KU Leuven) I obtained an additional master’s degree in Intellectual Property Law (LLM Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary University of London) in the UK.”

From an early age I was inspired by music. Music school was nothing for me, but Nirvana and motivation more than compensated for that when I bought my first guitar. Even today, making music is the hobby that gives me the most satisfaction. I did not become a professional rock artist, but my passion for creativity has determined all further choices. After my law studies (KU Leuven) I obtained an additional master’s degree in Intellectual Property law (LLM Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary University of London) in the UK. After working as a lawyer, I was head of Legal & Business Affairs at EMI Music Belgium for many years and then for some time at The Entertainment Group. I have now been active as an independent legal advisor for more than 10 years. I’m a lawyer at the Brussels Bar, where I’m also chairman of the Intellectual Rights Committee, and a registered legal consultant at the Bar of the State of New York. Furthermore, my involvement in the creative sector is expressed through my membership and board mandates at various sector associations. In addition, I frequently give lectures on legal and business aspects of intellectual property and/or the creative and entertainment industry.

“BESIDES CULTURE, I ALSO FANATICALLY FOLLOW FOOTBALL AND THE CYCLING CLASSICS.”

“BESIDES CULTURE, I ALSO FANATICALLY FOLLOW FOOTBALL AND THE CYCLING CLASSICS.”

“I was still a child when my parents introduced me to the blue and red double-albums of The Beatles, and ever since I’ve actually been bitten by music. It’s not that I – like my hero James Murphy sings in Losing my Edge – know every member of every good group from 1962 to 1978, but I do try. Besides that, I’m an art and film lover, and I also fanatically follow football and cycling (especially the spring classics).
I studied law at KU Leuven and followed an additional master’s degree in International and European Law at the VUB.

I was still a child when my parents introduced me to the blue and red of The Beatles, and since then I’ve actually been bitten by music. It’s not that I – like my hero James Murphy sings in Losing my Edge – know every member of every good group from 1962 to 1978, but I do try. Besides that, I’m an art and film lover, and I also follow football and cycling fanatically (especially the spring classics). I studied law at KU Leuven and followed an additional master’s degree in International and European Law at the VUB. Subsequently, I did an internship at the University of the United Nations with UNESCO in Paris and the Belgian Embassy in Berlin. I combined my first years as a lawyer with a Master’s degree in Intellectual Property Law and ICT Law at Odisee in Brussels. I live in Brussels, together with my wife and two sons, where I’m also professionally active. Since the summer of 2019, this is under the newly created label Indie Law, where I can ventilate my cultural passion in the form of advice in the creative sector and intellectual property law.
